My tree is still up, and decorations are being put away more slowly than I anticipated. Our playroom is in desperate need of a toy purge. A bit of Christmas hangover still lingers. However, a text message from an old friend to my husband the other day jolted my priorities and mindset for the new year more than anything else I've read or heard lately:
Enjoy everything. Take nothing for granted.
Our friend was diagnosed with ALS several months ago and is currently living with the support of hospice. My husband had texted him to check in and share some hunting photos he knew he would appreciate. Enjoy everything. Take nothing for granted. As this vibrant young dad of teenagers now faces terminal illness, these are the words he chose to share with us. They will serve as my resolution for the year ahead—I can't think of anything more powerful.
I feel so much gratitude for my family, my friends, and this work that I love. I'm stepping into this year with a renewed appreciation for connection and for remembering what matters most. Thank you for trusting me to witness and preserve pieces of your story—it brings me incredible joy!
